SUNY Oneonta’s undergraduate program preparing future middle and high school teachers is among the best in the nation, according to a new ranking by the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ).
The council evaluated more than 700 undergraduate programs across the country based on admission standards, subject-area preparation, requirements for courses on instructional methods, guidance on how to manage a classroom, and whether programs provide and ensure the high quality of practice opportunities. SUNY Oneonta’s secondary education program ranked in the top 10 percent nationwide, at the 94th percentile.
“At a time when fewer than half of the nation’s teacher prep programs successfully show future teachers both what to teach and how to teach it, it’s great to see programs like those at SUNY Oneonta proving that there is a better way,” said Kate Walsh, president of NCTQ. “Programs in our top 10 percent understand that their most important job is to deliver well prepared teachers to classrooms, by paying a lot of attention to the nuts and bolts of what it takes to become effective.”
SUNY Oneonta offers 10 nationally accredited undergraduate adolescence education programs, in biology, chemistry, earth science, English, family and consumer sciences, French, mathematics, physics, social studies and Spanish. A related minor in educational psychology is also available.
In addition to formal field experience in area schools, pre-service teachers have many opportunities to practice their teaching strategies, including service-learning activities and leading workshops for area students during the Catskill Area School Study Council’s fall enrichment seminar series.
The NCTQ ranking was the third national ranking of SUNY Oneonta's education programs this academic year. In April, SUNY Oneonta’s Elementary Education program was ranked No. 19 out of 35 schools nationwide included on the CollegeChoice.net list of “Best Elementary Education Degrees for 2017.” And in November, Teacher.org. ranked SUNY Oneonta's elementary education program No. 2 in the United States. SUNY Oneonta students interested in teaching at the early childhood, preschool or elementary school level can choose between two programs: Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) or Early Childhood/Childhood Education (Birth through Grade 6).
